On the Tuesday before our winter vacation, we celebrated all the learning we've done about our wonderful town by turning each of the second grade classrooms into an important part of our community. Thank you for your help in sending in those lovable stuffed animals as we transformed our classroom into the SPCA. The other classrooms became Scamman Farm, the first one-room school house, the Stratham Police Station, and the Post Office! We had a BLAST visiting each exciting room.
In setting up our classroom to represent the SPCA, we grouped animals by type and staged their visiting spaces. Each animal came equipped with some information cards to help interest potential adopters!
Each second grader had an opportunity to visit our animal shelter and "adopt" an animal of their choosing!
In Mrs. Atherton's classroom, Mr. Scamman taught us all about Scamman Farm!
We all found it very interesting viewing old photos and aerial views of the farm and learning about how their famous corn maze is created!
In Mr. Saltus' classroom, we were taken back in time as we visited a one-room schoolhouse! We quickly realized just how good we have it here at SMS---check out some of the discipline methods used back in the day!
After a quick snack break it was time to visit Ms. Donlon's room: The Police Station! We learned about the different jobs policemen are responsible for and created our own ID cards equipped with our fingerprints!
Our final stop was in Ms. Riley's room to visit the post office! We had a great time writing a letter to a teacher at SMS, addressing an envelope, and sending it down the mail chute!
All in all it was a great ending to our Community unit! We will begin to explore ways to give back to our community throughout the rest of our school year.
