Field Trip Coming!

Second Grade is headed on a field trip!

Permission slips for our upcoming field trip to Great Bay Discovery Center on Monday, June 1st were sent home on Friday.
Please have the permission slips signed and returned to school with $3 by Wednesday, May 27th.

Many parents have shown interest in chaperoning this trip, and we would love to have you! Please send in an additional $3 for each chaperon in your family when the permission slip is returned. Unfortunately, because we will be close to open bodies of water and taking part in several different scheduled activities, we ask that siblings remain at home for this field trip. This trip will take place from 8:45-11:55 am rain or shine, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing as well as sunscreen and bug spray!

Upon on our arrival, we will head right to the Grand Luncheon! It''s bound to be a busy, fantastic day!

Thank you for your support, we can't wait for our trip!

"And They All Lived Happily Ever After!"

The First Annual Second Grade Fairy Tale Wax Museum was a HUGE success!!! I've watched your owls work incredibly hard throughout this unit and it was so nice to see it all come together in this culminating event! When they entered our classroom, I couldn't believe my eyes!
Naturally, our morning greeting had to involve shaking hands with the new members of our classroom!
Take a look at our whole fairy tale cast of characters! (A huge thank you to all of your marvelous costume-creating skills---everyone looked GREAT!!)
* The Three Little Pigs Ensemble!

 *From Jack and the Beanstalk!
*The villain and the heroine from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves!
 *Some beautiful Disney Princesses!
*Some cute, little characters who didn't always make the best decisions ;-) (The owl students representing these characters make much better ones!)

*The whole crew from The Three Billy Goats Gruff!

*Can you guess these wonderfully portrayed lesser-known fairy tale characters?

After greetings were complete, it was time to open the doors to our wax museum, and bring these characters to life!
Our museum had SO many visitors---they kept very busy! I received many compliments regarding the creativity with their costumes, the art capabilities shown in their posters, and how incredibly knowledgeable they were about the characters they represented! Way to go, owls!

We had visits from parents, grandparents, siblings, friends' parents, first graders and their teachers, third graders and their teachers, other second grade fairy tale characters, other building staff members, and our fifth grade reading buddies. It was a day to remember by all for sure!

This great event wraps up our unit on fairy tales. Your children (along with me!) had a great time reading fairy tales, writing fairy tales, partaking in S.T.E.M related challenges regarding fairy tales, growing their very own bean stalks---the list is truly endless. I think I speak honestly on their behalf when we say, we didn't want it to end!
Three Little Pig adaptations!
Reece's great adaptation of the dialogue in the story!
Sharing our stories with our reading buddies in 5S!
Publishing Celebration!
By the end of our unit, some of our beanstalks grew straight past the castles!

I want to send GIGANTIC thank you to all the fantastic family members who helped create these awesome costumes and for coming to visit our wax museum. It is through your continued help and support that we can continue to make learning fun and engaging! The owl class would like to personally thank Hailey's dad, Mr. O'Kane, for coming in multiple times to help create our realistic life-size portraits. Everyone was truly impressed and we couldn't have done it without him! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

Once Upon a Time....We Studied Fairy Tales!

For the past three weeks, second graders have been immersed in fairy tales! They've been reading them, writing them, identifying common factors, comparing and contrasting tales----all in preparation for their upcoming wax museum, which will take place on Tuesday, May 19th
A HUGE part of this project has been reading tons and tons of fairy tales! Students have been read to, read independently, and have partner read numerous tales such as:

Once they heard the traditional tales, they were excited to learn that there were often many versions of the tale, depending on the location and culture of where the story came from. We looked closely at versions of Cinderella as there are over 1,500 versions worldwide! Glass Slipper, Golden Sandal, by Paul Fleischman, is a beautiful Cinderella story that takes pieces of the tale from around the entire world and creates one fantastic story.
This was also a great introduction to the concept of a fractured fairy tale, which takes the original tale and retells the story in a humorous way with unexpected characters, plot twists, and/or interesting points of view. Some favorite fractured tales we enjoyed were:
Enjoying all of these great stories, led us to a huge compare/contrast project having students identify similarities and differences between the tales and then creating illustrious posters teaching others of their findings! All of these great posters will be on display during our wax museum.
Reece's poster of The Three Little Pigs and The Three Little Javelinas.

Amelia's poster of The Princess and the Pea and The Penguin and the Pea.
Taylor's poster of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Tackylocks and the Three Bears.

Another fun project they completed, took a closer look at the many villains that pop up in fairy tales. Check out their WANTED posters, which also adorn our halls!
For a fun science connection, the week before vacation, the Owls planted their very own "magic beans" and created their own version of the Giant's castle. Will their beans reach the castle providing Jack a way up? Only time will tell!

Thank you to all who helped their children pick a fairy tale character and returned the pink paper to school. Our class was pleased to learn that EVERY student received their very first choice of character! At the wax museum on May 19th, the following characters will be represented:

For example, Little Red Riding Hood can have a red cape and a basket of goodies for her grandmother. Hopefully you can borrow an outfit, raid a dress up box, or piece it together from things you have at home. Let me know if you have any questions!
When we return, while continuing our work with fairy tales, we will also be looking more closely at other folk tales, such as tall tales and animal stories.
