Jan. 9th News

HAPPY NEW YEAR! How nice it was to be back together as a class. It sounds like everyone had a great holiday vacation week! Everyone did a great job transitioning back into the demands of the classroom. We had a wonderful, productive, hardworking week!
Highlights from our week...
*New Year: Without a doubt I can say we all started 2017 on the right foot! We thought about being our best selves and had a lot of great discussions about our hopes and dreams. As many of the Owls started their New Year with a toast, we decided to make our own "New Year's Toasts". Thinking of others, each student needed to choose one person and one wish for them. Here are a few of our "toasts"!
*Math: Coming off the vacation week, we spent the week reviewing all of the math concepts we have covered so far this year. Students had a lot of fun using "choice boards" throughout the week, which allowed the Owls to make choices about how they wished to practice the skills we were working on. With such great success, we'll be doing many more choice boards in the future! Ask your child about some of the math choices they made this week. Next week, we will be taking a midyear assessment and begin working our way through Unit #5: Addition and Subtraction.
For continued practice of important second grade math skills. check out some of these resources:
             Measurement:
             Base-10 Representation:
IXL (M.2Place value models - up to hundreds)
                     Base Ten BINGO
                     Base Ten Fun
             Comparing Values:
                     Comparing Race
             Telling Time:
                     Bedtime Bandit!
*Reader's and Writer's Workshop: We had a FABULOUS time during both reader's and writer's workshop this week. Launching into our character unit, students did a great job analyzing the characters in their stories. We talked a lot about how we can describe our characters, using both their physical traits, as well as their personality  traits.
We read a lot of great stories this week that gave us many opportunities to get to know different characters. This reading work naturally led the way into our writing work. Each student created their own book character and is in the drafting stages of writing their gripping story. After a share on Friday, it sounds like we have some exciting stories our Owl writers are creating!! Ask your child about the draft they created last week.
*Science: We had a BLAST launching our new science unit this week. After listening to the story, Bartholomew and the Oobleck (by Dr. Seuss!), we set out to determine whether the mysterious substance of Oobleck was a solid or a liquid.
After LOTS of experimentation, our scientists determined that Oobleck has properties of both! To make your own Oobleck mixture at home, mix 1 part water with 2 parts cornstarch (the food coloring is optional!).
*Scholastic Book Orders: Looking to start the new year with some new books? January book order forms were sent home early last week, and Scholastic's full catalog is available online. Orders are due Tuesday, Jan. 17th.
