SMS Celebrates International Dot Day!

Check out our dots!
Today, we had a great day celebrating International Dot Day! The day began with a wonderful whole-school morning meeting. Mr. Fosher taught us all a special "dot" greeting, showed us a slideshow full of facts about dots (did you know the dots on a golf ball are called dimples!), and then gave us a special reading of Peter H. Reynold's book The Dot.
After our whole school meeting, Mr. Gagnon invited us to join him outside to attempt creating a "human dot"! Mr. Fosher was even willing to climb wayyyy up on the SMS roof to capture the pictue! We can't wait to see how the picture came out! Stay tuned!!
After all this excitement we headed back to our classroom to work on other dot-related learning activities. In math, we worked with ten frames and coins. During word study, the Owls got to write their spelling words using straws and creating "dot" words!
Later in the day, we joined our neighbors, the 2R Giraffes and the 2A kangaroos, for some collaborative fun. After creating their own colorful circle, students them carefully cut it into quarters. They then had to trade pieces with one student from each class to create a new dot. Check out their newly designed circles!
Our final "dot" project was a fan favorite by far! Using special coloring sheets, students colored and created a dot, which was then brought to life using a special app!
The Quiver app is free in the iTunes App store (it's a little finicky and does require some patience!). Then, just print the special coloring sheet (more designs available at http://quivervision.com/) and watch their creations become 3D! As you can imagine, this was a HUGE hit!
As we closed our day, we thought back to how our day started. Mr. Fosher challenged us with the book's takeaway message: whenever something is hard, or you think you can't do it, begin by "making your mark" on the paper, and trying! It might end up being the mark you make on the world! Thanks for celebrating Dot Day!! :)
