A GREAT Start to Our Year!

What a great first week of school we've had!
We spent the week getting to know each other, practicing classroom routines and procedures, and developing our hopes and dreams. We're all set up for a fabulous year together!
After reading Oh the Thinks You Can Think, by Dr. Seuss, we realized the sky is the limit and each owl was challenged to choose one "hope" they have for their second grade year. Our beautiful rainbow mural will be on display for the remainder of the year to help us achieve our goals.

After creating our hopes and dreams we started a class discussion about what we need in order to achieve our goals. We talked about what being a great, helpful classmate would look and sound like. Also, we read our first Scholastic News article which focused on being citizens of a community. You can visit the Scholastic News website by clicking the link on the sidebar and entering the password: sms2h. On the website, students can find access to many interactive resources as well as enjoy reading previous issues.
Next week, we will use all we've learned to help establish our classroom "contract" which will help us all have a highly successful  year!

Thank you all for your help sending in books with you child celebrating their "reading life". The students were excited to share their books with their friends and did a FANTASTIC job talking about the stories and why they chose them. [As soon as all office paperwork comes back to school, giving the "a-okay" for posting pictures, I'll post their reading photos to the blog!]
I'm so excited to work with this group of readers as they continue to grow their reading lives!!

Yesterday, our first Scholastic Reading Club order form was sent home. There are a lot of exciting new books in the second grade catalog to choose from as well as from the Scholastic Reading Club website. You can place orders through the catalog and send it back to school or order online using our classroom code: HXF8D.
Book orders are wonderful because not only do they allow families to order books at a special low price to have at home, but every order also earns points for teachers to use on books and supplies for their classroom! Our first order will need to be entered online, or returned to class, by Friday, September 11th. Once all of the classroom orders are placed, it will take about one week to have them delivered.
