Welcome to December! It's hard to believe there's only three weeks left before our holiday break!
Students go outside for recess everyday unless it is raining or dangerously cold. Please be sure your child has appropriate clothing to stay warm. As always, please make sure all clothing has your child’s name in it so we can help keep things from getting lost.
*Reading: Right before our holiday break, the amazing readers of 2H celebrated all the hard work of their nonfiction unit by hosting an "Expert Museum"! Students in 2B and 2P were among our visitors and they we SO impressed (as was I!) by the amount of knowledge these second graders knew. They were able to share three main ideas, use picture examples across multiple sources to bring their information to life, and answer many questions at the end! They were, as one Owl put it, just like "real-life museum talkers"!
Returning from the break, we made a switch back to fiction as we began exploring characters and their stories.
*Science Buddies: Rejoining with our science buddies (it had been awhile!!), we examined the group plans we had made and tried to envision which ones we could actually build (while we might LIKE to have an xbox in our outdoor learning space, is that realistic?). Students were given two votes to represent the designs we could try to bring to life! After sharing the results, we reviewed the expectations of group work so we'll be ready to begin building next week!
*Science: As we begin to wrap up our unit study of earth materials, our young scientists began partaking in an engineering challenge. Using a unit called A Sticky Situation: Designing Walls, the Owls heard about the story Yi Min's Great Wall. In this story, the main character's class is having a problem in their school garden: a rabbit keeps eating all of their plants! After a field trip to the Great Wall of China, Yi Min attempts to solve this problem by designing a wall to protect the plants. We spent the week working as material engineers to evaluate various materials and begin designing potential solutions to Yi Min's problems. Using their evaluations and plans, this upcoming week, they will be challenged to design their own garden wall. Good luck, Engineers!
*5th Grade Buddies: Apparently his week was all about engineering! Meeting with our 5th grade buddies, 2H was put to ANOTHER design challenge! Everyone worked with the same material (legos), but was put to a different challenge! While some challenges required more patience, perseverance, and creativity, all groups worked hard to get the job done!

Questions to promote "School Talk":
-How is your nonfiction expert book coming? What are some of the "chapters" you have written? What are some words we can find in your glossary?
-What is Yi Min's problem with her school garden?
-Add 456+293.
-How did we make the mittens for our windows look like stained glass?
-Who is a character from a book you are reading? How would you describe their outside(physical) and inside (personality/character) traits?
-What lego challenge did you complete with your 5th grade buddy?
