Mrs. Healey’s Classroom News (2/8/16)

Happy Snow Day, Everyone! What an impromptu long weekend this has become. Hope everyone's been staying warm and been able to play in the snow! Progress Reports will be sent home as soon as we return to school (hopefully tomorrow!). Please return the signed envelope at your earliest convenience. As always, let me know if you have any questions or would like to set up a meeting to discuss your child's progress.
*Valentine's Day: Just a reminder that our class celebration is scheduled for this Friday. Our fabulous room mom, Jen Norton, has sent out a SignUp link asking for snacks for this celebration. Thank you for your help! We will enjoy trading valentines, playing a few games, and spending time together as a class. To get in the loving spirit, we did a fun creative writing project using the mentor text Vulture Verses: Love Poems for the Unloved. We decided even the "unloved" deserve a little love, especially around the holidays. Thanks to 2H, skunks, groundhogs, homework, chores, sharks, mice, and bees will all feel a little extra special this year :)
*Reading: Working in our goal clubs, students began carefully following their plan in order to help reach their goals.
Michael scouring books to find examples of literary language.
Sebastian recording his first read of a text.
Trey sharing his sticky notes with his club.
Nicholas listening to his reading using a fluency phone.
This fluency group chose to read to each other while sitting "campfire style".
We will celebrate all of their hard work this week as we end our "Amping Up Reading Power" unit. We will begin an elaborate, cross-curricular unit on fairy tales and folktales when we return from February break.
*Math: We began Unit 6: Whole Number Operations and Number Stories. This unit opens by revisiting graphing skills. We had a lot of fun making and interpreting graphs based on given data, but the all time favorite activity, was creating their own graphs based on their own survey question and results.
For the upcoming weeks, we will move into the "meat" of the unit, which explores new strategies for adding two-digit numbers and solving more complex number stories. In this time, to keep practicing graph skills, have your child visit the following sites:

*Scholastic Book Orders: Looking for some new books for February break? February book order forms were sent home early last week, and Scholastic's full catalog is available online. Orders are due today, Feb. 8th, so that they arrive before the vacation week!
Enjoy the rest of the snow day!
