What We've Been Up To:

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!
*Martin Luther King, Jr. DayIn order to prepare for this long, holiday weekend, our class spent the week discussing the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I was so impressed by the level of thoughtfulness your second graders displayed as they learned about Dr. King. As you can imagine, it was hard for them to believe that times in our country could be so different than they are now!
Watching Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech was a major highlight!
After reading many beautiful picture book biographies we focused on what Martin thought, how he felt, and what actions he took. Check out these amazing tributes they made!

*Science: We celebrated the end of our states of matter unit this week in a very tasty way! Using 1/2 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla, ziploc bags, salt, and ice, the Owls turned all those ingredients into.....ICE CREAM! While some needed a little more shaking to truly become solidified, it was a pretty fun and really yummy way to culminate our unit!

You can find the recipe here to try this fun experiment at home!
*Writing: Our young scientists did an incredible job taking ALL the research and results they've gathered in their science notebooks and creating an "expert book" on the states of matter. The knowledge they've obtained and the way they were able to teach others, blew me away! We enjoyed reading each others stories, giving compliments and praise, during a typical Owl Celebration!

While science writing will always be a part of our learning, we will be making a shift during our writer's workshop and focus on writing, "Gripping Fictional Stories" next.

Enjoy the long weekend!
