What We've Been Up To:
Hope everyone's been having a fantastic vacation!
*Writing: Throughout the month of February, second graders have continued their focus of writing persuasively. After a phenomenal job on their book reviews (remember back to their READbox book trailers!), we explored Yelp! as place to find restaurant reviews. Students enjoyed looking at reviews of their favorite local restaurants and discussing what needed to be included in a good review---details about the decor, the service, and most importantly: the food! After writing very descriptively, each student completed their own "Yelp" entry for our own "Yelp" wall! Check them out below!
Once we had our "Yelp Review Celebration Party", it was time to move onto our final persuasive piece: the travel brochure. Thank you for helping to send in information regarding your child's favorite New England attraction and accompanying picture. Before the break, students had a chance to examine various travel brochures and we crafted a document looking at the "moves" brochure authors use:

With all the "moves" they needed, our class began drafting rough drafts. With these nearly complete, they will begin writing their final drafts this week.
*Math: We finished up Everyday Math Unit #5 right before vacation. We will delve right into Unit #6: Whole Number Operations & Number Stories tomorrow. A lot of this material is a direct build from the material we covered in Unit #5. In addition to a few lessons on graphing, students will beginning solving more complex word problems and learning various strategies for adding and subtracting large numbers. By the end of the unit, students will be introduced to the Partial Sums Method of Addition---more information will be sent home when we get there!
As always, math continues to be a favorite time of the day for many students. Right before vacation, students used the iPads to solve two digit addition problems, and then check their answer by scanning the QR code. Too fun!

Can't wait to see all the Owls back in action tomorrow!
