Our class has been thoroughly enjoying learning about The Iditarod. The "Last Great Race on Earth" is a very tough and exciting Alaskan sled dog race run each year from Anchorage to Nome. This challenging race of nearly 1,000 miles covers some of the roughest, most beautiful terrain in the world.
This year, our Owl class will follow the 45th Annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race as we compete in our own race: an IditaREAD. Each second grader has been transformed into a miniature musher and will race their sled dog team through all the race checkpoints from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. All students will be challenged to match their mushers' arrival at each checkpoint by reading the minute equivalent (1 mile = 1 minute!).
Each student's progress will be measured based on ALL time spent reading. This will include reading independently, buddy reading, and being read to. Students will keep track of their reading on their special blue reading log. This log should be filled out each time a child reads and should be accompanied with a teacher or parent signature. Please remind your child to bring their log each day so we can move their mushers along here at school!
Along with the mushers in Alaska, today we logged our first miles! We will continue until the last musher reaches Nome!
